Jacob deGrom and the Contract Negotiations

From the Headline alone, It sounds like a ripped off Harry Potter Movie title. JK Rowling, Whatever you do, don't sue me.

Onto the Article:

Why are Justin Verlander, Luis Severino, Alex Bregman, Chris Sale as well as others getting these huge extensions? I'll tell you.

Some of these guys may have had some team control left, but also some of these guys were Free Agents after this season.

The Situation with deGrom is that he will be a Free Agent after Next Season.

My question is: why rush to sign him now?

If the Mets and deGrom don't reach an agreement before the start of the season, is that the worst thing in the world?

My answer is no! If he wants the money he is supposedly is asking for, Make him earn it in the form of repeating what he did last year or at least coming close or has a really good year, then pay him what he wants after the season!

Now, If he doesn't play towards what he did last year or somewhere close to it or if he gets hurt and is out for a significant amount of time, Sign him based on that.

Don't shortchange him obviously, but don't give him the astronomical amount of money he may be wanting if he doesn't come close to what he did or gets hurt and is out long term.

Here's where my issue comes into play. A Lot of fans are so quick to judge based off of what other teams are doing so they can rush to call the Wilpons cheap, yet they gave deGrom a 10 Million Dollar raise while avoiding Arbitration and as of this article, the Mets are ranked 6th in Team Payroll throughout the entire league. To call the Wilpons cheap after they bought the Syracuse Minor league team and have control of them for 25 additional years, They took on the Money to pay Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz as well as approve a promotion earlier in the Spring to make coming to the Ballpark (Citi Field) Financially easier for those who can't afford regular priced Tickets.

The promotion was 5 Dollar seats in the Outfield for Weekday games (Monday-Thursday) for home games throughout the Season. The Promotion lasted until some time in March, but it was a Brilliant idea approved by the Owners. If the Wilpons were truly as cheap as fans made them out to be, I don't think they would've approved of such a money saving plan for fans.

But now, back to deGrom.

So again, what is the rush? Make deGrom work for it!

The Mets shouldn't make a Determination based on this season alone, They should make a determination based on this upcoming season and not based off what other teams are doing.

Also, Keep this in mind, deGrom is up there in age, he isn't a young kid anymore. He is 30 and turning 31 this year.  The Mets as well as deGrom have to keep his age in mind when making the decision to re-sign him and for the length and money as well.

That's the end of this one.

Until the Next blog my Friends,

LETS GO METS!!!
