The Smash Brothers: The Story of Dom and Pete

Good morning everyone! Did the forces of Evil become confused on the way to your house? I hope they have!

But now, It's time for another edition of "Sunday Reading!"

Today, we talk about the two 1st Basemen that have made a name for themselves this season.

In the early goings of Spring Training, It was a battle of who was going to get the Starting Job of being the Mets First Baseman. It was primarily a battle between Former 2013 First round Pick Dominic Smith and 2016 2nd round Pick Pete Alonso. Smith Struggled early in his career with the Mets, getting all the starts at First Base in 2017 for the Month of September and getting sporadic starts here and there in 2018 accompanied with Back and forth flights to and From Vegas.

For Alonso however, his success started in AA Binghamton of 2018, hitting everything he saw, promoted to AAA Vegas, hit everything there but wasn't promoted to the Big leagues come time for September call ups. Instead, Alonso stayed in the Minor leagues, continued to rake, played in the AFL (Arizona Fall League), Raked there and got his invite to Spring training.

Both Smith and Alonso did well in Spring training, but there was a dilemma, Who was going to be the Starting First Baseman?

Lots of people (myself Included) thought that Smith would get the Lion's share of starts at First Base while Alonso goes down to AAA (Now Syracuse) in order for the Mets to get the Extra year of Protection while others thought that The Mets would forgo the extra year and have Alonso as the starter with Smith as the Bench Player or sent down to Syracuse.

Welp, What happened was that Alonso won the starting Job and the questions that followed were "What will Happen to Dominic Smith?"

Without everyday playing time, surely the Mets would send him down. Well the Opposite happened. Smith Stayed up with the Mets and turned into a Part time player, Getting starts at First whenever Alonso was given the Day off.

In the Beginning of May, Smith was sent down to Syracuse to get everyday playing time, but was soon called up 7 Days later to be back on the Roster.  Off the Bench, Smith was hitting the ball every which way, hitting over .375 in March and April! Alonso however, was also mashing the ball and hit .292 in March and April.

May however, would prove to cool Alonso off a little bit, but the Home runs kept on coming! Smith would still be raking in his part-time role! With Alonso batting .232 in May and Smith continuing to rake with a .355 Average. The end of May however, was when both Alonso and Smith would both see playing time at the same time! Smith would take reps in Left Field, Alonso would take First and at times, Smith would Sub in for Alonso in the later innings for Defense at First Base.

Seven Games into June, Smith is destroying .375 while Alonso is coming back to form at .242 but the Home Runs continue to come! Both Alonso and Smith have been beneficial to this Mets team this season.

I can't imagine the Team trading Dominic Smith for help or even as a Deadline whether Buyers or Sellers. Both Smith and Alonso have embraced their roles supporting each other more than what fans would've thought!

Whatever got to Smith, seems to have woken up his true potential! He is Mashing the Ball every which way and taking advantage of all of his opportunities! Lots of fans in his limited time before this season, we're calling the 23 year old Smith a bust due to lack of playing time, not performing well and the weight issue was a part of it.  His motives were questioned by fans after being overweight and being late to one spring training game last season.

Could it be Alonso's support of him? Could it be support of the Manager Mickey Callaway? Could it be Smith knowing he doesn't have much time to improve? The answers are ones we may never know, but whatever it is, I'll certainly take it and hopefully, so will the fans.

These two players seemed to have sparked something with the Mets. The Team has the pieces it needs to be successful, they need to remain consistent!

In Conclusion, I could go on all day about the Mets, but the story is about Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso, "The Smash Brothers" if you will. They give the team offense, Positive energy and most importantly, although he's a rookie, Alonso has shown incredible vocal leadership for the Team! Something no one expected but everyone will take it!

That puts an end to this one my Friends!

Until the next Article,

LETS GO METS!!!
