Edwin Diaz is now a Met!....But, so is Robinson Cano.

Last night, The New York Mets made a Blockbuster trade. They Acquired 8 Time All-Star, 36 year old, 2nd Baseman Robinson Cano and quite possibly, one of, if not The best closer in the League, 24 year old Edwin Diaz from The Mariners in exchange for Veterans outfielder/1st Baseman Jay Bruce and Relief Pitcher Anthony Swarzak and Prospects Outfielder Jarred Kelenic, Right Handed Pitcher Justin Dunn and Right Handed Pitcher Gerson Bautista.

Some will say that the Mets overpaid for the Two Mariners in the form of the 3 prospects, Some will say they paid a good price and some will say (Myself included) that you've got to "Give to get" and that's exactly what the Mets did. Former Agent turned GM Brodie Van Wagenen is making it clear that he is not sitting back and watching things happen. After this trade, Van Wagenen is now viewed as being aggressive. Despite Cano being a former Client, Van Wagenen snagged and as stated earlier, The Best Closer in Baseball.

Van Wagenen made it clear in his introduction as Mets General Manager, That he wanted to win now and that the 2019 season was going to be a competitive season. Van Wagenen wasn't Mets fans First choice for General Manager, in fact according to the Wilpons, The other two GM candidates at the time Chaim Bloom and Doug Melvin wanted to go through a Rebuild, not a Retool, but a Rebuild. Some fans wanted Bloom and some wanted Melvin, but Almost next to none wanted Van Wagenen. An Agent who had 0 Experience as an MLB Experience as a General Manager, who as stated earlier pulled off this Blockbuster trade and who is rumored to not be done yet.

My Reaction to this trade is this:

I don't Like that Robinson Cano is here for 5 years, especially with him being 36. I like the Diaz portion of the Deal, but It was a package deal, to get Diaz, you need to get Cano....Hopefully after 2 or 3, The Mets can find a way to either trade or Buyout Cano....I don't want a 39, 40 or 41 Year old 2nd Baseman on the Team playing 2nd Base on a Regular Basis....If Cano turns into a bench player after year 3 and say McNeil or another young gun comes in, I won't have an issue with it....But if Cano is starting at age 39 and 40, I won't like it. Trades like these you need to give to get, and I certainly understand that. especially to make an aggressive move like this. We'll see how this plays out during the season. Van Wagenen is showing he isn't holding back! Good for him so far. My fear is that Cano will want to play past year 3 out of 5 with the Mets....If Cano retires after year 3 with the Mets, I'll have no issue with that. If he doesn't, I'll have a thing or two to say.

This move definitely opened the eyes of not only Mets fans, but of fans of Baseball, Other Teams, Writers, Insiders and experts around the League were surprised that Van Wagenen, A Guy who has 0 experience as a General Manager made such a Big Trade!

A lot of Mets fans thought that this Selection by the Wilpons to make Van Wagenen General Manager was a way to save money, not be competitive as well as stick with the same players that were with the team last season. That obviously changed this offseason with the release of some players. I'm not going to get into all of them, but I'll mention a few names: Rafeal Montero (Some fans were "Pounding the Table" for him), Phillip Evans, but the most surprising was the Mets not Tendering a contract to Wilmer Flores. The "Walk-off King" as Gary Cohen dubbed him. Wilmer will be missed by Mets fans especially after the rumored trade he was supposedly involved in that fell through, he was seen crying because he didn't want to be traded. He was 16 when he was first with the Mets organization. It will be sad to see Wilmer sign with another team, but I'm more than Certain that he will always remember and cherish his time with the Mets!

Back to Van Wagenen and this Cano/Diaz Trade. As stated earlier, it is said that Van Wagenen isn't done yet and rumored that the Mets are talking to the Indians about a possible Corey Kluber trade! Though the Priority is Bullpen and Catcher, If, Key word is "If" the Mets end up acquiring Kluber, they can perhaps move Jason Vargas into the Bullpen and perhaps acquire a Free Agent Pitcher for the pen to bolster it.

Catcher is another Priority that needs to be addressed, as long as Yasmani Grandal or Gary Sanchez don't come to the Mets, I'm fine with almost anyone the Mets can get!

In Closing, This trade Puts the Mets in the eyes around the League, but Diaz and Cano don't make a team, there are other areas as I stated that are Top Priority. Plenty of Off-season to go and plenty of moves left to be made!

Until the Next Blog my Friends,

LETS GO METS!!!
