Dave's Eiland: The Woes of the Mets Pitching Staff

It's Sunday once again and you know what that means? It's time for Sunday Reading!

Today's article is about Dave Eiland and the Woes of the Mets pitching staff!

Lets begin!

This season for the Mets pitching staff as a whole has been atrocious to say the least! The team is 29th in the League with a 5.45 ERA ranked 27th in the entire Major Leagues!

Some fans understand that the Pitchers are to blame, but some fans are going off the deep end and blaming either d'Arnaud and even take it a step further and blaming Dave Eiland! Allow me to list 5 things here for everyone:

1. Eiland has 2 World Series rings to his name as a pitching coach, one with the Yankees in 2009 and one with the Royals in 2015 (They beat the Mets that year).

2. Eiland helped Matz in a way that benefits him in the form of not losing his temper on the mound and giving him a "Routine" if he allows a hit, run, home run, etc.

3. After missing 2 Seasons due to Tommy John surgery and a set back, Dave Eiland came in 2018 as the Mets pitching coach and helped out Zack Wheeler, so much so, that Wheeler himself, thanks to Eiland had a great 2nd half of the season while maintaining a 1.68 ERA for his 2nd half of the year!

4. This season, Wheeler, Matz and Vargas are having a better time commanding their pitches than deGrom and Syndergaard combined!

5. Jacob deGrom won a Cy Young because of Eiland's knowledge last season!

We can point the finger at Travis d'Arnaud, Management, Coaches, weather or even the hot dog concession stand for all you want, but in the end, this is Eiland's 2nd year as Mets pitching coach and his resume says that he shouldn't be given the hook in April when 2 of the 5 starters are struggling.

When your Ace and your #2 Starter are struggling, but your #3, #4 and #5 starters seem to be doing better than them, It's not the pitching coach, it's the two pitchers and not the catcher!

I tend to highly doubt that when it comes to deGrom and Syndergaard that they are Injured. deGrom recently had an MRI on his Elbow and the results came up clean as a whistle and Syndergaard mentioned after last night's game that he Just doesn't a feel for the Baseball, meaning that he Just doesn't have it right now. The Velocity for both Pitchers is indeed there, but again, I highly doubt Injury has anything to do with their struggles.

If you ask me, I think it's strictly mechanics, Their Velocity is there, but the Command is off! If they can get the command for their pitches back, this rotation will be can solidified!

It's not just the starters that are struggling, it's the Bullpen as well! They have struggled, but only when the Team is losing. When the Team is winning though, the Bullpen is virtually untouchable! The few Relievers that have been good for the Mets this season so far are: Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman and Edwin Diaz.

Everyone else as either been under the category of "Mehh" or Just awful. At the Same time though, when the Team is winning and the Bullpen has to come in, They hold down the fort!

Could it be Confidence when the team is down? Could it be Mechanical? Could it even be weather related?

All are possibilities! I'm not going to use it as an excuse, but I do think that all of those play into why the Bullpen thrives when winning and struggles when losing.

Fans demand a new pitching coach, but honestly, who is better than Dave Eiland? Yes, it's only April, but Pitchers need to work through their own messes! The Difference between a Position player struggling and a Pitcher struggling is that a Position player (Depending on the Player) will play everyday and work out of it a few starts or more. A Pitcher plays once every 5 days and it takes longer for a pitcher to work through his own struggles!

Understand, this rotation was a really good one last season and this season, it's starting off rough. There are 135 games left to play and I doubt that this Pitching Staff will struggle the entire season like it is!

Before anyone says anything, The Mets are not going to pursue Dallas Keuchel or Craig Kimbrel.

That does it for today!

Until the Next Article my Friends,
